Protecting Finances from Scammers
Scammers target people everywhere. Luckily, UWCU is here to help.
One day I got this email from a company I’d never heard of saying that if I wanted to cancel my subscription I needed to call. They had charged $650 to my account! I called and they tried to instruct me to turn on my computer and get a cancellation code from them. I kept saying, “I don’t know who you are. How did you get my financial information? Can I speak with someone else?” They hung up on me. So, I searched for the company online and it came up as a scam.
At the same time, the Loss Prevention team at UW Credit Union contacted me about the suspicious $650 charge to my account. They investigated it and within just a couple of days the money was back in my account. The credit union also wanted to cancel my debit card and issue a new one, as a standard fraud prevention measure, but I couldn’t wait 10 days to get a new card in the mail. Luckily, I was able to go to the branch and get a new card issued instantly.
Later, in a separate incident, I was speaking to a Financial Specialist about getting a new credit card. I noticed my credit score had dropped so the Financial Specialist did some investigating, looked at my credit report and found a new account listed under my name at a different financial institution that I hadn’t opened. It was a false account! If we hadn’t reviewed my credit report together, I wouldn’t have seen that fraudulent account and been able to resolve it.
So, this is two instances now that UW Credit Union has been able to help me. I was so thankful. When something like this happens and the team at UW Credit Union acts so quickly and saves me, it’s just a plus for everything.
I love the convenience at UW Credit Union, the service, the online features. And knowing that if something happens, if something looks wrong, I can call them up and get help immediately – that peace of mind is so important.
